temperatures in some different cities. it was just below 50 degrees in the berkeley shores this afternoon. it wasn't much warmer overlooking the bay from the oakland hills. it was a clear sunny day but a chilly 51 degrees. and in hayward, temperatures stayed at 50 degrees as the christmas tree lot geared up for the season. what's the mobile weather lab registering now? our chief meteorologist paul deanno is out in the elements in castro valley. paul. >> reporter: liz, allen, it is certainly chilly. it was the coldest afternoon in the bay area on average since 5 days before valentine's day in early february. mobile weather lab in castro valley it is 46.8. it's already dropped three degrees in the past 20 minutes. when the sun goes down, temperatures drop like a rock. let's establish how warm or not we got today. san jose a high of 52. concord 51. napa 53. livermore only 51. setting the stage for a widespread freeze tonight, most of the bay area is under that freeze warning. the only exception is the city of san francisco. widespread lows in the mid-20s to the low 30s so watch out. protect

this sunday in the city where mandela grew up. >> nelson mandela's life did not just impact the people of south africa. it also affected people around the world including here in the bay area. christie smith is live in oakland where nelson mandela visited more decade ago. >> reporter: good morning to you. nelson mandela came to the bay area shortly after his release from a south african prison. at the time the bay area was active in the anti-apartheid movement and as you can imagine, welcomed him with open arms. >> bay area. sisters and brothers. >> reporter: nelson mandela visited the oakland coliseum and made a huge impact. 60,000 people packed the coliseum just for a chance to hear him speak. the bay area of course supported mandela for years to try and dismantle apartheid in south africa. anti-apartheid protesters staged campus protests nationwide. some of the largest at uc-berkeley, in 1986 california became the largest government in the u.s. to divest of south african investments. paul cobb was arrested at a berkeley protest, and deputy mayor swanson was a staff member for ron de

francisco. temperatures are already plummeting around the bay. san francisco is the only city safe from below freezing temperatures tonight. in the east bay temperatures had already dropped well below 40 degrees earlier this evening. they will go even lower as the night continues. we have team coverage on the cold snap. we begin with spencer christian with a look at how low the temperatures are going to drop overnight. spencer? >> all right. it is possible we will see temperatures certainly down near the 20-degree mark and possibly below 20 in a couple spots. the temperatures are dropping rapidly, and this is the area covered by our freeze warning for the next two nights. virtually the entire bay area except the city of san francisco. sub freezing temperatures and temperatures down into the 20s. we will see the possibility of exposed pipes bursting in this kind of exposure and this kind of cold. as an increased risk of hypothermia. looking toward the bay bridge our prediction for the next two to three mannings -- mornings we will have two mornings in the deep freeze with low 20s the nex

the nation, continuing to be down. chicago and new york city, in the 30s and 40s. the east bay at 33 degrees. not only temperatures in the 30s, but already in the 20s. napa at 26. novato at 25. freeze warning until friday morning for most of the bay area except san francisco. that's when temperatures range 25 to 30 degrees. take the pets inside and protect those plants. overall, you're going to notice some of the largest impacts across the south bay, including san jose. that's where we're joined by anthony with a warning for the morning commuters. >> that's right, jeff. in fact, the warning is, for bridges and overpasses, you know just as well as i do, that the bridges and overpasses do freeze more quickly than other surfaces. and the reason behind that is, because you lose a lot of the heat across not only the top part of the bridge but the bottom part and the sides. that cold air invades every location across the bridges and overpasses. tomorrow morning, that's the main threat that we're going to be watching for, commuters head out across the bay area. bridges and overpasses will freeze qu
